celery

Celery is a key vegetable in households across the world. It is popular for snacking and also a staple in many recipes. Celery belongs to the Apiaceae family, which also includes carrots, parsnip, fennel, parsley, and cumin.

Why is it good for my body? Celery is 95% water! Like many other vegetables, its biggest nutrients are carbohydrates and fiber. Celery is also a good source of Vitamins A, C, K, Potassium, and Calcium.
Where does it come from? Celery was first grown in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and it's been used as both food and medicine for centuries.
What season is it fresh? Celery is a cool weather crop that needs a long season of stable temperatures and moist soil. You can buy celery yearlong at most grocery stores.
How do I store and handle it? Look for tightly packed, bright pale green stalks that are crisp and snap easily. Darker-colored celery will have stronger flavor. Store your celery in your refrigerator's crisper drawer in loose plastic, such as an unsealed plastic bag. When stored properly, it can keep for about 2 weeks.
What are ways to eat it? Mirepoix is a staple in cooking which includes 3 key ingredients: carrots, onions, and celery as the base for soups, sauces, stews, and other dishes. Chopped celery adds a great crunch in salads and celery sticks can be stuffed or eaten with dips. Celery is also used in juices and smoothies.
How do I introduce it to first-time tasters? To introduce celery to new tasters, having it cooked in a soup or stew gives the flavor and a soft texture. New tasters can also try celery sticks with dips, hummus, or nut butters.
