oranges


Oranges are a citrus fruit that is a hybrid of pomelo and mandarin. There are over 600 varieties of oranges, but they are not all orange in color! The most widely grown variety is called the sweet orange or common orange. Oranges have leathery skin, known as the peel. They can have around ten segments of fruit inside, as well as seeds which can grow more oranges.

Why is it good for my body? Oranges provide a host of nutrients and protective plant compounds, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Studies show that consuming oranges regularly may benefit your health in several ways. Oranges are especially high in fiber, Vitamin C and folate.
Where does it come from? Oranges originally came from Southern China and Malaysia. They were eventually introduced in Europe and Christopher Columbus is said to have brought orange seeds with him to South America. Currently, Brazil grows more oranges than anywhere in the world. In the USA, Florida is known for growing oranges.
What season is it fresh? Oranges are available year-round in grocery stores. The ideal conditions for growing oranges are present in areas with reasonable amounts of sunshine but moderate temperatures. It is also beneficial to grow oranges in regions with good moisture in the soil.
How do I store and handle it? Oranges can last at room temperature for about a week, but will last a month if stored in the refrigerator.
What are ways to eat it? Oranges are perfect as a stand-alone snack! Eating oranges provides great fiber and hydration. Orange juice is the most popular juice in the world. You can also add oranges to smoothies and salads. Oranges and the zest of the orange are used in many different cuisines and recipes.
How do I introduce it to first-time tasters? Oranges have a very sweet taste and soft texture, which is great for first tasters. Carefully cutting orange segments will help with the membrane that might be of concern for beginning eaters.
