Brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts are also members of the Brassica family. They are related to broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

Why is it good for my body? Brussels sprouts contain high amounts of vegetable protein, fiber, and carbohydrates. They are especially high in vitamin K and vitamin C.
Where does it come from? Like its name suggests, Brussels sprouts were first cultivated in Brussels, Belgium. Like broccoli, the Brussels sprout's ancestor grew wild in the low countries of Europe. This plant was selected because the enlarged buds growing on the stalk looked like little cabbages!
What season is it fresh? Brussels sprouts from the farm are available September to November, as they prefer a cooler growing season. Because Brussels sprouts have gained in popularity, they are widely available in grocery stores year round.
How do I store and handle it? Brussels sprouts should be refrigerated, unwashed. They are best used right away, but can last a week in the refrigerator. You can also blanch the sprouts for 3-5 minutes, rinse in cold water, then store in an airtight container for freezing.
What are ways to eat it? Brussels sprouts can be prepared in many delicious ways! A favorite is roasting because it brings out the best flavor. They can be sauteed, stir fried, and can even be used raw in a slaw. Try our recipe for Brusselitos!
