Why is it good for my body? The saying: "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away" makes a lot of sense! Apples are an excellent source of fiber. They also contain Vitamin C and apple skins are full of antioxidants. Apples are fat, sodium, and cholesterol free.
Where does it come from? The apple originated in an area between the Caspian and Black Seas and were a favorite food of the ancient Greek and Romans. Apples are believed to date back to 6500 BC. The first apples grown in North America were planted by European settlers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
What season is it fresh? Apples are harvested in the fall and most are picked by hand. Apples are available year-round in grocery stores, but more locally harvested varieties will be available in the fall at your stores, farmers markets, orchards, and roadside stands.
How do I store and handle it? Apples should be treated with care so as not to bruise them. Apples are best stored cold, in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. They will keep for several weeks, if not bruised.
What are ways to eat it? Apples are a great, handheld raw snack! They can also be used in a variety of sweet or savory recipes, raw or cooked.
How do I introduce it to first-time tasters? Cooked apples or applesauce are excellent first foods for new eaters.
