Why is it good for my body? Peaches are loaded with vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to our health. Peaches are especially high in vitamin A and C, as well as B vitamins. As far as minerals go, peaches provide potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. Every balanced diet should include peaches!
Where does it come from? Peaches originated in northwest China sometime around 6000 BC. They were the preferred fruit of Chinese emporers, and even today China produces 60% of the world’s peaches.
What season is it fresh? Fresh peaches are in their prime during late summer. August is National Peach Month in the USA. Canned and frozen peaches are available year round in grocery stores.
How do I store and handle it? When selecting, give the peach a gentle squeeze. If it’s hard it needs more time to ripen. If it has a little give, then that peach is ready to eat. Also, smell your peaches. They should have a sweet fruity aroma. They can be stored at room temperature while ripening, but should then be refrigerated to last longer.
What are ways to eat it? It’s hard to beat the taste of a fresh, ripe peach in season! Peaches are delicious as a stand-alone fruit for snacking. Peaches– fresh, canned, or frozen– are used in baked goods, salsas, salads, jams, ice cream, smoothies, and even savory dishes.
How do I introduce it to first-time tasters? Peaches are easily introduced to new tasters. Their soft texture and sweet flavor make them a perfect first food.
