There are about 3,000 known varieties of pears grown around the world, which vary in shape, color, and taste. Within the United States, there are 10 varieties.

Why is it good for my body? Pears are an excellent source of dietary fiber, which helps you stay full and keeps your heart and gut healthy. Many of the nutrients and antioxidants found in pears live in the skin, so be sure to wash them well and enjoy with the skins on!
Where does it come from? Pears grow on medium-sized trees and are native to coastal and mildly temperate regions around the world.
What season is it fresh? Pears are harvested late summer through October, but are available year-round in grocery stores.
How do I store and handle it? Pears can sit out at room temperature until they are ripe. Once they are ripe, it is optimal for them to be stored in the refrigerator. Some prefer pears more crisp and crunchy, while others prefer to let them soften.
What are ways to eat it? Pears can be enjoyed raw as a snack, eaten or sliced like an apple. Pears can also be cooked alone or in various baked goods.
