pomegranates

Pomegranate is an ancient food with a name meaning "seeded apple" in Latin. This beautiful fruit grows on a small tree or shrub from pretty red flowers. The "arils" or seeds are the part of the fruit that we eat.

Why is it good for my body? Pomegranates are well known as a superfood. Packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, folate and potassium; pomegranates are helpful for cancer prevention, digestion, inflammation, heart health, and blood pressure.
Where does it come from? Pomegranates are believed to have been first cultivated in Persia, which is modern day Iran. This fruit is mentioned in Greek mythology and other religious writings.
What season is it fresh? Pomegranate season typically runs from October through February, so enjoy these special fruits when you can pick them up in the grocery store!
How do I store and handle it? Pomegranates can be stored as a whole fruit in the refrigerator for up to two months. Once the arils have been removed, they will keep for about 5 days in the refrigerator. To keep them longer, spread the arils in a single layer on a lined baking sheet to freeze. Then store frozen arils in your freezer in an airtight container or bag.
What are ways to eat it? Check out Doctor Yum's video on how to cut a pomegranate and remove the arils. They are delicious as a cruchy sweet snack on their own, but we love to toss them in salads. Try Doctor Yum's amazing Dinosaur Kale Salad!
